A Big Win At Home On A Pleasant Friday Afternoon
The weather did not look to promising but that lovely feeling of playing at home on a Friday afternoon was most comforting to all. The ground was looking at its best after a recent refresh and new scoreboard was seeing its first senior football action.
However, the first ten minutes belonged to the Paul Salmon coached Carey. They came out firing as if it was going to be their party. It was their first game for the season as they had drawn the bye in the first round.
They threw everything at us and if not for inaccurate kicking could have easily led 5 goals to nil. However, once the first flurry was over the Magenta machine started to rev up. Our first score came from Piggo kicking accurately at the Newlands end.
As is traditional at Haileybury the crowd began to swell with about 400 students filing around the ground to cheer on the bloods. They cheered every time we went near the ball and the team responded. We banged on 3 more quick goals to have a moderate lead at the first break.

With all of Senior school now in full voice the atmosphere was electric. And the bloods were responding in the only way they know how. Lynchy and Plugger were dominating in the key forward positions, being constantly fed by the on ball brigade of Scully, Jacko, Marto and first gamer Bryce Arnott.
The big men were in control - Tyrone Vickery, James Orr and Luke Davey continually giving us first use, A heavy bump by Lynchy on Marto’s tagger saw a scuffle break out to the thrill of the crowd but the umpires were not impressed and 3 Bloods sent from the field along with 1 Carey player.
In the mean time the Bloods had managed to snare 8 goals 3 points to 1 goal 2 points for the quarter.

Starting with 2 players down was always going to be tuff but that’s the price for undisciplined play (not that the crowd saw it that way).
Carey had regrouped at the half time break and came out ready to make amends. They were taking advantage of the loose men and running hard. Carey exploited the advantage and kicked 3 goals to nil and had the majority of the play until the numbers were evened up with five minutes to play.
When the full compliment was allowed back on the field after serving their penance the game flow changed again. Haileybury steadied with 3 goals but found themselves slightly out scored for the quarter. The quarter was a big test of the defensive skills of the midfielders and the backmen who were under enormous pressure for most of the time.
They wont want to be under that sort of presser again.

Fearing another Scotch type comeback the bloods come out firing in the last quarter to bang on nine goals from 18 scoring shots with superb teamwork. Carey could only manage one point.
This effectively removed any chance of a Carey revival.
Big Plugger was back to his best bagging 8 for the game and Lynchy continuing his good form with 5. Marto was back to his brilliant best with 4 and a nice debut by biscuits with 3.
