With no AFL footy on the television on Saturday arvo, the AFL is hoping that people will get to their local footy club to enjoy the celebratory activities as part of the AFL's Community Football Weekend. The Brisbane Lions players will be at many footy clubs throughout the State. Springwood is fortunate to be able to welcome big man Matthew Leuenberger and co-player Pat Garner during the Seniors' game from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm.
For most of the juniors, it will be "knee high to a Leuenberger", as Matthew stands 203 cm tall. He has won All-Australian under-18 honours and hails from East Perth. He was picked at No. 4 in the 2006 AFL Draft and is a highly rated modern-day ruckman who can cover ground quickly and win plenty of the ball. He has a great kick, flexibility and mobility, excels at stoppages and can push forward and kick goals.
Pat Garner is a former Western Magpie junior and it is fitting that his home club will compete in Senior footy against Springwood on Saturday.
The Lions players will be hosted by the Pumas' under 9's team and Coaches Karen & Scott Pyke and Team Manager Kim Mapperson. The team will also participate in a number of activities with the Lions players during the breaks in the Seniors' game. Club Junior Development Officer, Derek Berry, has organised a handball competition at quarter time, a mini game & on-the-run clinic with the Under 9's and Under 10's at half time, and a kicking competition at three-quarter time. Up for grabs will be 2 footballs signed by the Lions' visitors for the winners of the skills' activities. Juniors can bring their footballs along to get the players' autographs.
All Puma juniors, parents and supporters are invited to attend the games and make it a great day!
Also up for grabs are the fantastic prizes to be won in the Club's Monster Raffle, drawn on the day.
And ... the action doesn't stop there at the club this weekend as on Sunday, Mothers Day, the Pumas Under 16's play Alexandra Hills at 10.00 am, while the Under 18's meet Redlands at 2.00 pm. Both will be cracking matches with both sides performing well in the first three rounds of the season.
