The Western Jets have continued their good start to the season with an impressive 5 goal win over reigning premiers Calder Cannons.
The Jets started slowly with the backline under pressure early, but with Kyle Hartigan leading the defence the Jets were able to rebound well and lead at the first change by 7 points.
The second quarter was played in similar fashion to the first. Calder were wasteful in front of goal kicking 1.7 while the Jets kicked 3 goals straight to extend their lead to 12 points at half time. Jack Fitzpatrick was again providing a strong target up forward.
The Jets took control of the game in the 3rd quarter but couldn’t quite shut the gate on the cannons. The lead got out to 6 goals before Calder rallied late to have half a chance going into the last change. The lead was cut to 29 points.
The half a chance turned into a full blown chance when Calder kicked two goals in a minute at the start of the last quarter. They were up and about and reduced the margin to 15 points before the Jets regained their composure. Late goals to Fitzpatrick and Carroll gave the Jets a good 30 point win.
There is another competition bye this week. The Jets next game is against the Gippsland Power at Morwell on Saturday the 17th May.
