BOMBERS BRING HOME U18 PREMIERSHIP
Monday, 11 September 2006
The North Shore Bombers Under 18 team were greeted with wet and slippery conditions as they prepared to take on minor premiers Pennant Hills in the 2006 U18 Premier Cup Grand Final at Henson Park on Saturday. Carrying the hopes of the entire club into the game, the young Bombers were well prepared by coaches Ben Carlyon and Ben Sheidow who are experienced campaigners when it comes to grand final football.
Some North Shore supporters felt that destiny would play a hand this grand final day as the last coach to win an under 19/18 grand final was current North Shore vice-president Jeff Melrose. His side from 1991 was captained by Simon Carlyon, the brother of current coach Ben Carlyon. In 2006, Jeff's son Nick played a key part in the side that produced a premiership some 15 years later.
In fact there were many familiar surnames in the side with son's of former North Shore greats beginning their careers with the club. The son's of team of the century members, Alan Fitzgerald (Dale & Brendan Fitzgerald) and John Baker (Jackson Baker) and former player Geoff Fohley (Rohen Fohley) all represented the Bombers in the Grand Final.
The first quarter saw the Bombers begin the game strongly, but wayward kicking due to the tough conditions saw North Shore kicking 3 goals and 6 points to go into the quarter time break with a 24 point lead. Key forwards Marcus Carney, Lachlan Pryor, Patrick Brackin and Simon Davies were causing headaches for the Pennant Hills defence and down back Nick Melrose, Brendan Fitzgerald, Tony Barker and Matthew Robinson were stopping all Pennant Hills advances.
In the second term, Pennant Hills posted their first major with the Bombers adding two more goals to take a 30 point lead into the half time break. The Bomber on-ballers in David Martin, Levi Brain, Dale Fitzgerald, Jacob Lloyde and Kade Tangney were getting first use of the ball and leading the opposition to every contest.
In the final two terms, Pennant Hills only posted another point with North Shore adding another four goals to post a comprehensive 57 point victory to take out the 2006 SFL U18 Premier Cup. Jacob Lloyde was judged best on ground. The final scores were:
North Shore Bombers: 9.10 (64)
Pennant Hills: 1.1 (7)
