DEAN DAVIES WINS PHELAN MEDAL
Tuesday, 6 September 2005
Outstanding North Shore youngster Dean Davies was tonight awarded the Sydney AFL Best & Fairest award, the Phelan Medal at the Dockside function centre at Darling Harbour. It was an outstanding performance by the 19 year old North Shore rover who has taken all before him in only his second season of senior football.
Dean Davies now joins North Shore greats David Elleman (1930), Jack Guthrie (1939), Ken Champion (1947), John Hardy (1951) and Arthur Crisp (1962) as North Shore players that have won the Sydney AFL's most prestigious individual honour.
Earlier in the evening, Dean and fellow Bomber Marc Lord were also named joint winners of the Sydney AFL's National Bank Rising Star Award. This award was given to the most promising junior player in the Sydney AFL and the judges couldn't split the two Bomber on ballers.
Not to be outdone, Marc Lord also took out the Howarth Medal which was awarded for the 2005 representative player of the year. Marc had an outstanding representative campaign in 2005 achieving best on ground honours in the rep game against Queensland and performing strongly against the Riverina side during the year.
Prior to the Phelan Medal count former North Shore champion and 1951 Phelan Medalist John Hardy was inducted into the Sydney AFL Hall of Fame. John was a former Captain and President of North Shore and was named in the North Shore team of the century in 2003. This award is recognition of the contribution John made not only to North Shore but the Sydney AFL community. Congratulations to John and the Hardy family.
