Round two of the Greater Sydney Juniors (Sydney West) competition saw some enthralling matches played with the Under 10's keeping their unbeaten record intact with a solid win over new club, Rooty Hill at Cook Park. In the Under 11's and Under 12's, both teams went down narrowly to Blue Mountains with good displays of open football on view. The Under 14's reversed last week's loss to St Clair when they recorded a "mercy rule" win against Penrith. In possible the upset of the round, the Under 16's recorded a big win against arch-rivals, the Razorbacks in a stunning display of football. The Lions opened up after Razorbacks took the lead in the early stages of the match and never looked back in continuing on their winning run. They face Penrith next week in the local derby.
Under 10's Match Report V Rooty Hill Power
A great turn out for round 2 of the competition – again this week we had 15 players. Rooty Hill Power didn’t have enough players and we helped by ‘lending’ them a couple of players to even up the numbers. The scoring was all one sided (Lions) with goals being added to the board in each quarter. The boys were keen to continue their winning way from last week and put in a great effort to the sound of cheers and positive comments from their proud parents. The first goal came at the 10 minute mark with a six pointer coming off the boot of James Rix. Everyone helped move the score along by getting the ball to the forwards – other goals were kicked by Kayne, Noah (x2), Shamous and Hayden (x2). Minor points went to Sam, Coen, Lachlan, and Thomas. Dino awards went to Matthew McAlpine and Noah Maher. Congratulations to all the boys for a great team game. Training continues through the school holidays on Wednesday afternoons – no game 19 Apr – next game is 26 Apr.
Lions 7.4-46 def Rooty Hill Power 0.1-1
Goal Kickers: N. Maher 2, H. Perry 2, K. McDonagh, S. McDonagh, J. Rix
P.S. The U10 boys have another reason to be proud – they scored more points in their game than the West Coast Eagles scored against the Sydney Swans on Sat night – great work U10 Lions.
Under 11's Match Report V Blue Mountains
By The Sideline Scribbler
After good training session the 11’s were keen to put into the game the
lessons learnt from last week.
The boys exploded out of the sheds after a coaches brief and were lead
onto the ground by Kieran Thurley (drawn captain for the day). With the
warm-up completed, coin toss and ball bounced the Lions went quickly to
centre half forward due to some clean work from the centers. A tussle
developed on the far wing and the Lions were eventually pushed into the
backline, some nice passing from Trent Haines to Matt Holburn showed
class and the Lions were unlucky not to get paid a mark in the backline
allowing the Roo’s to start the scoring. With the momentum their way the
Roo’s went forward from the bounce but after scoring just a point the
Lions cleared with William Mathews attacking the bouncing ball then
picking it up on the half volley. Sam Batson had a good run up the wing
and Jesse Gratzotis was very busy marking then backing up his kick to
earn another couple to set up Trent Haines with a set shot at goal and
he didn’t miss.
The Roo’s replied quickly with a goal to respond but the Lions were
attacking from the centre and able to lock in the leather within their
forward line. A good pick up and shot at goal from Jack Morrison was
promising but just missed the sticks at the Creek end. Mathew Holburn
snapped true at goal after the Roo’s couldn’t clear the danger zone and
the score was even. The Lions had the manes up going forward again after
the bounce with Murray Smith playing a role and Sam Batson scoring a
nice goal.
The siren sounded for the first quarter and the Lions led 3-1-19 to the
Roo’s 2-1-13.
The second quarter started well for the rejuvenated U11’s although the
Roo’s went forward and another strong mark from the gutsy Joel Walsh and
some good roving from Mathew Webb had the Lions back on centre wing.
Some fast and strong play from the Roo’s caught the Lions out of
position and the scoreboard was even. With some good ruckwork and
clearances the Lions looked impressive using some good tackling and
passing skills with all players getting into the contest and showing a
lot of courage when on the defense forcing the Roo’s to take long shots
at goal. The Roo’s were attacking relentlessly in the last stages of the
quarter and managed to add 3 goals to their tally.
The Lions went into the big break on a high with a good passage of play
resulting in Jack Morrison scoring a long goal. At half time scoreboard
reading Lions 4-1-25 Blue Mountains 5-6-36 and the home team were
playing well as a team.
Some explosive play started the third term when Joshua (Falzy) Falzon
marked a good pass from Jack Morrison and kicked to the full forward
line. Sam Batson roved the spilt ball and found a path to goal. Murray
Smith was rucking the bounce well and Kieran Thurley was getting into
the game with some good marks. Joel Walsh was working hard as ever and
Trent Haines showed good judgment running out from full back to
successfully pressure a shot on goal .The Roo’s had the stamina and
started to put the backline under some pressure and were able to grab
the lead at the ed of the term.Roo’s 6-10-46 Lions 5-1-31
Trailing by only 15 points the team (like all good ones) had a sniff at
a win.. Another goal from Jack Morrison kept the score to Lions 6-1-37
Roo’s 7-12-54. But the siren sounded and the margin was in favor of the
Blue Mountains team who outscored us in the end. The boys played well
this week with everyone having a impact on the game. Thanks to Hayden
for playing after an earlier game
Well done to all players this week as you are playing well as a team and
starting to learn positions and game play
Under 14's Match Report V Penrith White
It was a much improved Lions side this week against Penrith White with all players contributing to a strong performance. The Lions started the game in great fashion and opened up a lead in the first quarter and continued to build on that throughout the day. There were several notable performances with Jake Jeffreys-Brown taking a strong mark in the goal square and kicking an important goal for the Lions early in the game. Jordan Campbell had an immediate impact when sent onto the ground in the 2nd quarter notching up a mark and a goal in his first minute on the ground. Dan Kelly had a busy day at full forward and kicked his first goal for the year. Luke Crebbin was active on the half forward line with several important possessions and an outstanding game of footy. Chris Nolan gained many possessions around the ground and kicked 2 goals for the day. James Devlin was another player to stand out on the day with a 3 goal haul.
Alex Hocking and Alex Wade both returned to form this week playing in the mid field while Pat Pope and Michael Kerr had their usual busy games gaining many possessions around the ground. Mark Myhill started the game well and continued to gain possessions across the half back line throughout the day and even had a stint in the ruck in the last quarter and received a Dino’s award for his effort. Martin Pope was also busy all day in the centre of the ground driving the Lions into attack on several occasions and received a Dino’s pizza award.
Overall it was a great team effort from the Lions this week with all players making a contribution.
