One-point thriller for Borough over Zebras

PORT MELBOURNE registered it's first win of the 2008 VFL season on Saturday afternoon, with a thrilling one point victory over Sandringham in excellent conditions at TEAC Oval.
Both sides were ultra-competitive in the opening stanza, as the Borough kicked 6 goals to 4 to lead by 14 points at quarter-time.
But it was the Zebras who took it up to the Borough, as they took a handy 6 point lead at the main break after a 6 goal to 3 second term.
The Zebras fought out the third quarter well as they kept their noses infront at 3/4 time by 9 points, after a 4 goal a-piece third term.
But it was the Borough who excelled in the final term, as they kicked 4 goals to 2, to get across the line by one-point.
The final scoreline reading Port Melbourne 17.7 (109) to Sandringham 16.12 (108).
Best players for the Borough included utility Luke Cotchett (3 goals), midfielders David Robbins (1 goal) Matthew Pearce (1 goal) and David Spriggs (1 goal), Adrian Bonaddio (2 goals), Chris Cain (2 goals) while former Carlton pair Luke Livingston and Dylan McLaren were also very good.
For the Zebras forward Nick Sautner (4 goals), midfielders Peter Summers (2 goals) and Shane Valenti (3 goals) as well as Melbourne veteran Adem Yze (2 goals) who contributed well despite the loss.
In the reserves game prior to the seniors, it was Sandringham who smashed Port Melbourne by the tune of 60 points.
The final scoreline read Sandringham 21.18 (144) to Port Melbourne 4.10 (34).
Trent Zomer (4 goals), Guy Martyn (1 goal), David Gribbin and Nick Lyall were all very good for the Zebras while Dean Francis (2 goals), Patrick Hassett, Jonathan Mullins and Sam Debruin all performed well for the Borough despite the loss.
Port Melbourne face arch rivals Williamstown in an away game in Round 3 of the VFL, while Sandringham face up to Frankston in a home game.
