Seniors
Other things were not as well in the universe: the Magoos went down and the omens were in the air. Despite Nathan Lyons being followed by the ball, Jesse Derrick loitering with intent, and Hamish Dick following up his impressive debut for the club with another more than handy contribution – no flash in the pan that Dick - we appeared to travel 2 out and 2 back for the first three quarters and tried to snatch it in the back straight on the line. Not recommended in our sport. Will Hart, S. pull on the footware next week?
Howard was tagged from the start but his football nous stood out in the clever positioning, quick handballs and deceptive passing off his left foot, the right not being put to use for the day. The bench was worked overtime with what appeared to be pre-game planned and timed rotations. The quarter was fought out in the midfield with swift incursions inside the fifty. Redlands put the first two on the board. Jameson and Spencer worked well in defence and Zorko and Lyons were well fed by Mitch Andrews. A poorly targeted clearing kick by Derrick, or poorly anticipated by the target, (hard to tell from outside the boundary) resulted in an intercept and goal to Redland. Eventually Hayley notched our first for the day and his first for the club, followed by Dienjes lurking successfully to snaffle a couple including one after the siren. Ten points down at the first break.
We dropped off the pace further in the second stanza with a goalless quarter while Redland added the odd 5. Ben Walters was looking dangerous and one piece of play between him and Rian Dienjes featuring Daicos type kicks as the pass and shot at goal, was unfortunately not rewarded. We counted five run and carries by Lyons around the stand flank and into the 50 but all were repelled. Meanwhile opposition accuracy and opportunism hurt us. Like last week we were matching the inside 50s but not finishing well. We went into the rooms down 11 - 3 69 to 4 - 6 30.
Our intensity picked up after the main break. A mark to Tinker from a long ball by Spencer got us away with a goal. Ben Walters went down with a shoulder injury which proved to be muscle bruising as against suspected dislocation. Beattie showed plenty of courage in the face of a high speed collision – it was representative of his efforts for the day. Hayley and Howard combined well to force the ball to Dick who baulked in classic fashion for his first for the day. Hamish then supplied Zorko who finished off successfully from around the 50 mark. A goal after a 50m penalty to Redland left us 35 points down. The game was becoming characterised more by stoppages than the early ‘kick-to-kick’ in the midfield. It appeared to advantage us with Andrews dominating the ruck and Lyons the ‘everywhere man’ providing plenty of ball to the likes of Tinker who goaled off a free kick, Dick slotting another and Jesse Derrick impressing the Socceroos selectors from the goal square. Unfortunately Clough suffered a concussion and we lost his services for the rest of the match. We eventuallyput on 6 to their 4 majors for the quarter and had 21 scoring shots at the
posts against their 20 by three quarter time, but were 21 points down.
Our heart stopped as Redland had a goal within 18 seconds of the start of the final stanza and their supporters had the stand vibrating. Our mind had sobering thoughts but fortunately the playing group was made of better stuff. Lyons was inspiring and Andrews, while tiring from a gargantuan effort all day, was forcing the nut forward. Dick calmly slotted his third and Lobby picked up his first to put us within 10 points. Harty was putting his voice box to good use in advising both players and umpires. Redland replied but we kept coming. Howard, Hayley, Edwards and Stewart figured in a section of good old fashioned play putting themselves over the ball and forcing it forward with strength, cool heads and courage. On another occasion Howard was a bit too quick with a clever handball from the point post and it was rushed through. Jesse Derrick found his Beckham foot again and it was a 5 point ball game. By this stage it was an empty midfield with the ball locked in our half. On the occasion it found its way down back Carrol and Boston were able to run it out. Mitch Andrews was having a bit of a break up front and marked on an angle that did not allow sunlight through the big ones. Showing all the agility of a mobile shorter player he took the right option and goaled – 1 point up! Mitch was estatic and resembled a galloping giraffe making his way back to the centre urging his team mates on with voice and body language. Great value. Redland forced a point and the instructions from both benches hit maximum volume and frequency. Redland benefited from turnovers, and running into a spacious forward line, scored twice to be 12 points up with 3 minutes left on the clock. After the second of those goals, Lobby streaked from the centre bounce and made no mistake. One goal and another scoring shot would be enough. It was like an afternoon at the 'G' with your team finishing the better but the opposition defending with what energy they had left.
We had the momentum - but it wasn’t to be. Congratulations to Redland, it has been a long time between drinks for two victories on the same day. And congratulations to our blokes who showed the ‘comic cuts’ and character to get back in the game. A venerable oriental saying suggests that if it doesn’t kill you, you learn from it – so be it.
Redland 19 – 7 121 def Broadbeach 17 – 13 115
Goals:
Zorko 4, Dienjes 3, Dick 3, Lobb and Derrick 2 each with singles to Edwards,
Andrews and Hayley
Next week we host Southport. Forget the respective results thus far, we grow extra legs against this mob, and on our own track we will be a different proposition.
Magoos
Round 2 at Redlands on Saturday was seen by many as an easy assignment for the Cats, however several notable senior players were dropped from the Redlands
ones to the twos, making the game a tighter affair than first thought.
The game started out very tight with some strong defensive work from both sides being the feature of the first 10 minutes.
Redlands directed their forward thrusts to Craig Millar, with Tim McKay wearing the key forward like a glove and completely outplaying Millar in the first quarter.
The entries inside 50 were even from both
teams but Redlands
accuracy was far better than the Cats.
At quarter time the scoreline read: Redlands
4-2/26 to Broadbeach 0-5/5. Another goal less first term for the Cats.
The second quarter was a terrible one for the Cats.
Continual turnovers in the midfield presented
Redlands
with numerous inside 50s and this translated to goals.
Timmy Mc was still holding Millar who to half time had only two disposals.
Redlands quickly skipped away from the Cats opening up a 30 point lead midway through the term.
At about the 15 minute mark of the quarter Broadbeach started to get tough at the contest and this seemed to lift the side.
Peter Meade laid a wonderful strong tackle, followed by a solid bump from Mark Perkins and a couple of pack breaking spoils from Jackson Emblem.
Unfortunately the domination of the final 5 minutes of the half did not reflect on the scoreline with the Cats going goal less to the long break.
At half time the scores: Redlands
7-4/46 to Broadbeach 0-8/8
The third quarter saw a big turn around from the Cats. Suddenly the aggression at the football had
Redlands looking over their shoulders.
The accuracy on goals started to come for the Cats and it was game on.
Some terrific attack on the football from Peter Meade resulted in two goals, one to Tyler Green and the other to himself.
Again Meady was in the play and this time Dan Cullinen was on the end.
Unfortunately Dan could not convert this time.
Sean Goedheer (Shorty) was playing solid football at both ends to half time and was thrown in the middle in the 3
rd
with immediate success.
His tackling was terrific, creating a stack of pressure on the
Redlands midfield.
When Marcus Tippet goaled after a spoil from Timmy Mc, and some great crumbing by Meady the scores were drawing close.
An unfortunate free kick in the middle to
Redlands resulted in a goal against the run of play.
Further goals to Pete Hill and Brodie Hatswell gave us a nine point ball game with a quarter
to go.
Three quarter time: Redlands
8-7/55 to Broadbeach 6-10/46
Jacko was moved into the ruck for the start of the quarter and immediately won the knock. Unfortunately we did not rove the ball and Redlands launched an attacked off half back. With Bart Webster and Travis Fraser injured, the Cats needed to get a quick couple of goals to ensure Redlands were under pressure. This was not to be with the first two goals of the quarter going to the Bombers. A mistake on the sidelines meant Shorty could play no further part in the game leaving only 1 on the bench in pretty warm conditions. Tippo goaled shortly after
from some great lead up work by Pat Evans (who slogged away tirelessly all day), and Meady. Some niggle crept into the game late with Jacko taking exception to some close attention from the Bombers defender. A fight broke out and as a result Dan Cullinen was struck in the nose and subsequently had to come off as the bleeding could not be stopped. Not a nice sight to see a fight but the assistance given to Jacko by his
team mates was pleasing. The game petered out from there with Redlands
coming out on top by some 39 points. A significant turn around from the practice game three weeks earlier.
Final Scoreline: Redlands
14-10/94 to Broadbeach 7-13/55
A very disappointing loss. In his final address to the team Bosto called for them to play like they want to win. He also called for mateship which appeared lacking in both games this season.
The good: Debuts
by Aaron Oehlman, Trav Fraser to half time and Tyler Green. Also the stellar form of Pat Evans and Tim McKay
The bad: Goal less to half time and goal less in the first quarter two weeks in a row
The ugly: Poor
disposal creating turnovers
Best Players: Tim McKay, Pat Evans, Jackson Emblem, Peter Meade, Tayler Rolfe, Pete Hill
Goals: Tippet – 2, Hatswell, Green, Meade, Hill, J Frawley – 1 each
