FOR as long as Callum Brown can remember, he has wanted to play at Collingwood where his father Gavin is revered.
That dream became reality in November when he was selected with pick No. 35 in the national draft.
“It has been tough but I’ve loved every minute, it has been exactly what I thought,” Brown said.
“It has been enjoyable and challenging at the same time.”
The lightly-built midfielder/forward had been turning heads during his first pre-season, completing every training task asked of him, alongside fellow father-son selection Josh Daicos, the son of Peter.
Brown was pushing for a pre-season game until an untimely bout of glandular fever, which has seen him resting at home for the past couple of weeks.
Brown has been leaning on Pies skipper Scott Pendlebury and Tim Broomhead for advice. The pair have both battled the same condition.
“I’ve definitely been on Netflix a bit,” Brown joked.
“I haven’t been able to do too much, they said rest at this stage is really important to enhance the recovery time.”
Brown returned to the club last week and is expected to be back in full training in about a month.
Prior to the glandular, he had put on 3kg since the Eastern Ranges’ TAC Cup finals campaign ended in September.
However, his glandular diagnosis meant any good work he put in over the pre-season has effectively been undone.
“I’ve gone back down now (in weight) because of the glandular, which is a bit annoying,” he said.
“Hopefully I can put that on again quickly.”
Brown has had to reassess his 2017 aims, but wants to get out on the field as early as possible.
“I want to put in some really good form through the VFL to start,” he said.
“That is where I am going have to start to get my fitness up and then hopefully I can push for senior selection as early as possible.”
