Seniors
A few injuries at training and a new face or two meant some structural change in the side, but we dealt pretty comfortably with all that Redland could offer on the day. We got up by 53 points, 13 19 to 7 7 in a game that the Cats pretty much controlled. One of the training injuries was to Dane Eaton, who transferred to Broadie from Southport last week on the strength of the largesse of club supporter Ray Mead. Ray read about the transfer in the Bulletin and arranged the $2,000 payment faster than a Rudd budget cut. Such unsolicited generosity is not the norm except for the ususal suspects down at Catland, and we are indebted to Ray.
Back to the game: It commenced with Mitch Andrews looking an opponent in the eye, with the subsequent ball-up ruck contests assuming a basketball look. Mitch continually tipped the pill our way surviving a crunching blow from behind in the third stanza, to run out the game as a clear winner. In a reasonably close contest in the first quarter, our backs repelled attacks with dashing run and carry plays as per coach instructions. Matty Boston, Wade Dickson and the Stork were dominating while our everywhere players, Edwards, Zorko, Lobb and Spencer pounced on opportunities. Second game recruit, Dick, H followed up his promising debut. Contrary to reports we can confirm that Dick, H is one Hamish Dick, a likely looking type from Old Scotch, and not as the rumours suggested, a Richard Cranium lookalike. Hamish took the eye last week in slotting our first goal and was prominent again on Saturday. The quarter finished on a sour note with Dean Howard appearing to injure his ankle. One has the feeling he will come up for the season proper in more ways than one.
At the first break the siren gave the up the ghost and quick thinking by the timekeeper in consultation with the central umpires saved us from a 3 stooges comedy - the field umpire kept the time and signaled quarter's end by whistle. Meanwhile Dale Perkins organised a back-up siren for the last half.
The second stanza was noteable for a bit of kiss and tell and a great gang tackle by Lobby and Tinker - Melbourne Storm would have been pleased. We went to the main break with a 4 goal plus lead. Better players being Edwards, Tippett and Stork. Nathan Lyons went down with a calf and did not look good in being assisted off the deck.
Nathan reappeared after half time to the sighs of a large female contingent, and along with Derryn Stewart, Sam Edwards, Mark Perkins and Jesse Derrick, was responsible for maintaining the same lead at the final drinks session.
The last quarter witnessed 'Tinker' Zorko add to his tally with 2 goals within 30 seconds some three minutes in and a later third to bring up 5 sausage rolls for the day. Roundy got amongst it, Matty Boston was clocking up 1st and 2nd assists with great runs out of the back, Jamie Lobb was unlucky not to score an outstanding twin calico after a good run shepherded by Jesse Derrick, and Hamish Dick was providing creative run. It seemed obvious that Harty's message in this regard was getting through. Hot recruit, Tauri Zimmer, went down like a proverbial sack of in the final seconds. Tauri had started well down back on a quality opponent, faded and in a sign of character, came back pretty well late in the game. Redland improved their scoreline on the back of a 50m penalty after a congenial discussion between the umpire and a catter.
Great to see developing players such as Mark Perkins, Daniel Jameson, Marcus Tippett, Nathan Quick and Ryan Keates look more like belonging out on the deck in a senior side. Not so great to see Paul Rolfe with a laptop computer during the game - scary!

Magoos
Coach Boston was a worried man. He had threatened to walk if the magoos didn't win this week - he only had himself to blame after the disgraceful tanking exhibition last week. Fortunately, for him, and it must be said, the club, the dew kickers took care of business in an emphatic manner. No need to get too carried away though, as it is difficult to gauge progression against an undermanned opposition. None-the-less, it appeared as though there was a degree more committment, more listening and acting on coach's instructions, more direct play and a vastly improved work rate.
There were 14 goalkickers in our total of 19 13 with Josh Pierpoint notching 5 before withdrawing at the half way mark for a well earned rest. The final margin was 113 points but more importantly Scottie Beattie, who was fired up pre-game by Anna the Trainer of 21st birthday fame, showed he will be back in the ones in the weeks to come. Good to see Pat Evans and Tim McKay back on deck also. And with the likes of Tom Clough, the unavailables for today, and the Stingray reps, there will be healthy intra club competition for the opportunity to wear the Stubbs legacy colours in both sides this season.
