IT'S only February but in case you hadn't noticed, FOOTY'S BACK!
Not just that, but better still, SO IS COMETTI! Yep, Saturday's
start to the NAB Cup heralded the unofficial return of the world's
greatest game, all the way from Dubai, but it wasn't just Neil
Craig's Crows who hit the sand dunes running with an 81-point
thrashing of Collingwood. So did Seven's Dennis Cometti,
who, if his 2008 opener is any guide, is in for another magnificent
year behind the microphone. How's this for some brilliant
early-season Cometti-isms:
■ As Collingwood, in particular the Shaw brothers,
struggled early: "Rhyce Shaw, Heath Shaw ...
unsure."
■ About the AFL's newest outpost: "In Dubai, it's Abu
Dhabi, or as we say in Perth, Abu Derby."
■ On Collingwood youngster Ben Reid, whom Cometti
noted had played only four games and already had been to Arizona,
Johannesburg and Dubai. "So at that rate if he plays 200, he will
rival Phileas Fogg" (of Around the World in Eighty
Days fame).
■ On the prospects now facing Collingwood: "The loser goes
to Albany (in Western Australia). What they will notice is fewer
cranes."
■ And this as the match drew to a close: "You say Dubai
and I say hello."
