2016 Flemington Colts U12 Football Team Premiers
An amazing season for the Flemington Colts U12 football team ended with a premiership victory against the Tarneit Titans on Sunday (14 August) at Galvin Park in Werribee.
The coaches Brendon and Damien, had a mantra, ‘be humble in victory and gracious in defeat’. Maintaining a respectful attitude toward the opposition and the umpires was a key element of training throughout the season.
Respecting the Titans’ performance throughout the finals was an easy task for the Colts, considering the Titans had come from a fifth position on the ladder, to being grand final contenders. The Colts had met St Bernard’s, who had finished second on the ladder, in the second semi final. St Bernard’s had kept it a tight game throughout the first three quarters but in the last quarter the Colts lifted and brought the win home. St Bernard’s then went up against the Titans in the preliminary final and to the surprise of many the Titans battled through for a win. Titans were now strong premiership contenders. Considering the strong contest the Colts played against St Bernard’s, the Titans’ recent performance made them a little nervous.
In the days leading up to the grand final the Colts knew it was going to be a head game and all of their training in being level headed paid off. The Colts went into the game knowing that they had the ability and spirit to win but that they needed the right attitude too. They recognised that everyone, Colts and Titans alike were already winners to have made it to the grand final but that if they wanted the premiership cup they were going to have to work to get it.
And work they did. The first quarter the Colts kicked 3-1-19 and kept the Titans scoreless, which put them in a comfortable position but the Titans fought back outscoring the Colts in the second quarter. The second half saw the Colts come home strongly. The final score read 10-2-62 to 1-1-7. But scores alone do not highlight the tough contest that was felt across the field throughout the game.
When the question was asked, ‘who were the standout players for the Colts in the grand final?’ the answer from player and spectator alike was resounding – ‘The whole team!’
Each Colt played their part while working as a unified group and ultimately they shared in the glory. Congratulations to the Tarneit Titans for amazing fight throughout the season and congratulations to the Flemington Colts – the undefeated champions and premiers of 2016.
