The Werribee Football Club, currently sitting on top of the VFL ladder, is pleased to announce the re-signing of senior coach Simon Atkins. The former AFL star with the Bulldogs and the Lions has impressed all in his first year of senior coaching.
Tigers President Greg Welsh is full of praise for Atkins:
We always wanted Simon for more than one year and he has done a great job in all areas. His relationship with the Bulldogs is very good, both with the players and the coaching staff. He is really developing our younger players and certainly has the total respect of everyone at the club - staff, players, board members, sponsors and the supporters. Simon is very professional and passionate about the club. He is a good ambassador for the Werribee Football Club."
Simon Atkins played 127 games for Footscray then 41 at Fitzroy before joining Werribee. He played 81 games before retiring at the end of the 2000 season.
He then coached the Werribee reserves as well as adding the role of runner for the Bulldogs under Terry Wallace to his footy experiences. After a year coaching at the Coburg Tigers Simon returned to Werribee this year as senior coach.
I've really enjoyed the experience. The Bulldogs players have been really receptive to my game plan and the style of footy I want Werribee to play. Our recruiting this season has paid off and the young players on the list are coming along well. That is one of my goals - to develop our young talent so the list is strong and we have depth. That is how you build a club and we all want Werribee to be a force in the competition beyond this year. The re-signing is going to allow the club to move forward with players for 2006 and for any other recruiting.
