AFL Recreational Football
AFL Recreation Football has been developed to provide an opportunity for all Australian Football enthusiasts to enjoy participating in a game that has strong parallels with the traditional game. AFL Recreational Football is easy to play, is not physically demanding, can be played by all ages and genders and, most importantly, has an emphasis on fun and safety. Played in a friendly social environment, it enables people of all ages and ability levels to participate in male, female or mixed teams.
AFL Recreational Football can be played in a variety of settings due to its social nature. The game is designed so that it can be picked up and played by a group of friends in a park or in a more structured environment at local community clubs.
Football Victoria Game Development Manager Mr Michael Daniher states that "AFL Recreational Football has been developed as a result of the Carter Report released in October 2001. The report recommended that Australian Football needed a recreational version of the game to cater for the growing recreational participation market."
AFL Recreational Football Competition
Teams consist of 12 players with eight on the field at any one time. In mixed competition a minimum of 3 females must be on the field.
Games consist of 2 x 20 minute halves with a 5 minute interval.
Key Rules
- The game is non-contact
- Teams comprise of 3 forwards, 2 midfielders and 3 backs.
- Turnovers can be gained by removing a flag from the person in possession of the balls flag belt. They will then have 3 seconds or 3 steps to dispose of the ball. If they have had prior opportunity to dispose of the ball when a flag is removed, it is holding the ball and a turnover will occur.
- If the ball touches the ground, it is a turnover.
- The ground is 100m long, by 50m wide, and is broken down into three sections. Forward zone (20m), Midfield zone (60m) and Defensive zone (20m).
- A player can shoot for goal only after marking the ball in his/her scoring zone. The player must go back and take a set shot for goal.
- 9 points shall be awarded for a female goal, 6 points for a male goal.
