On Sunday night Northern Knights star ruckman Matthew Kreuzer became the second player in TAC Cup history to win the illustrious Morrish Medal and Coaches Award double. The ceremony took place at the Moonee Valley Race Club on Sunday September 9th where the TAC Cup Team of the Year was also announced, with four Knights named in that.
Kreuzer becomes the second player to achieve this feat and he follows the footsteps of former Knights player Brad Smith, who did the double in 1992 - the TAC Cup's inaugural season.
In a highly successful evening for the Knights on baller Adrian Totino finished runner-up in the Morrish Medal count (as voted on by the umpires) polling 15 votes to Kreuzer's 19. The Medal was largely fought out between the two of them all night with only one vote separating them at the end of Round 13 - but that best on ground performance from Totino was the last time he polled for the year as Kreuzer went on to add three more votes in the run home.
In the TAC Cup Coaches Award Kreuzer polled in 13 of the 15 games he played and had opened up an almost unassailable lead by the half way point of the season. He finished up polling 50 votes and held a comfortable 13 vote buffer over Mitch Banner from the Western Jets.
After winning the two major awards Kreuzer was also named in the ruck in the TAC Cup Team of the Year. Along with him Knights Captain Jack Grimes was named on the ball, while Michael Hurley and Tim Bongetti were honoured with the full back and full forward positions respectively.
Knights Region Manager Peter Kennedy was ecstatic with the result of the whole evening. "It was a successful night for the club scoring the quinella in the Morrish Medal and having our players poll the most number of votes overall. Having four players selected in the TAC Cup Team of the Year is our best result this decade.
Matthew Kreuzer's achievement in being voted the best player in the competition by both the umpires and the coaches is a unique double. As well as being an outstanding talent he is a fine young man and a great role model in our club and the Northern Region. I wish him every success in the draft and his future football career.
Adrian Totino's effort in finishing runner-up to Kreuzer in the Morrish Medal was a great reward for his work ethic and commitment over the past season. We are also very proud of our Captain Jack Grimes, Tim Bongetti, Michael Hurley who along with Matt Kreuzer were selected in that TAC Cup Team of the Year.
