Teachers representing Northern Region Secondary Schools were invited to NAB Oval on Wednesday 18th April to attend AFL Victoria's launch of Secondary School Football in the Northern Region.
Simon Dalrymple, Development Manager AFL Victoria Northern Region welcomed everyone to the launch and introduced Steve Teakel, AFL Victoria's Youth Development Manager who spoke of AFL Victoria's commitment to assisting secondary schools in the government and non government system through its G Footy program and support from the MCC Foundation by addressing key issues including:
* Physical activity - match programs, alternative football programs such as AFL Recreational Football and International Rules, promotional activities
* Equipment Resources - coaches clipboard, footballs,
* Role models - AFL players, Jason McCartney "Your Destiny is a matter of Choice" to deliver a positive message regarding motivation, healthy lifestyle
* Leadership - sports leadership for students
* Curriculum support - incorporate Sport Education, Heritage resource, VCE resources, basic umpiring
* Professional Development - Level One courses and seminars to increase the confidence and skills of teachers to implement football programs
Steve also spoke about the G Footy AFL School Ambassador Program that has been a resounding success.
Gavin Crosisca, assistant coach from the Carlton Football Club gave a passionate address about his experiences in coaching and his thoughts on the way football is played today and future trends.
Schools represented were St Monica's College Epping, Eltham College, Banksia Secondary College, Diamond Valley Secondary College, Mill Park Secondary College, Viewbank College, Merrilands Secondary College, St Helena Secondary College, Reservoir District Secondary College and Ivanhoe Grammar School.
Each school received a coaches clipboard, TRUenergy VFL tickets, some footballs, and player medallions.
