The North Ballarat Rebels guaranteed themselves a top four finish with a hard fought win over Bendigo on Sunday.
Played in atrocious conditions at Bendigo's Queen Elizabeth Oval the Rebels overcame wind, rain, mud and a tenacious opposition to record a 7 point victory in a remarkably low scoring game.
The Rebels set up the win in the first quarter when they kicked two of their three goals for the game. Matt Sharkey and Ryan Herring took advantage of set shots at goal with a relatively dry ball to give the Rebels a 7 point advantage at quarter time.
North Ballarat dominated the second term but couldn't covert in front of goal when it counted. The Rebels registered 5 behinds for the quarter whilst keeping Bendigo scoreless. Defenders Troy Chaplin and Dan Matthews repeatedly repelled any Bendigo attack with Mick Foster at his best winning clearances. At half time the Rebels led by 12 points.
The start of the second half brought no respite to the shocking conditions with players from both sides barely recognisable amongst the mud. The conditions slowly started to take their toll on the visitors as Bendigo began to find their feet. Brendan Huf kicked the Rebels only goal for the quarter and minutes later hit the post with a second shot. The Pioneers kicked two for the term and suddenly the margin was back to 7 points at the final break.
The last term went just 24 minutes with both teams noticeably tired. One solitary behind each for the term was the only time the scoreboard attendants were required. The final siren bringing welcome relief to players and supporters alike.
Better players included Mick Foster, defender Clint Ladiges, All-Australian Troy Chaplin and the consistent Dan Matthews.
The Rebels have now won 5 on end and take on the Western Jets at Williamstown next Saturday in the final home and away game of the year. A win will guarantee the side a top two finish.
