The Springwood Australian Football Club's Management Board and head coach Troy Moncur completed the first step in the Pumas 2007 AFLQ State League Pineapple Hotel Cup premiership campaign with the appointment of new coaching staff this week. Former Tasmanian State League player Peter Ryan was named as the Seniors assistant coach, while Ben Mihailovic, a former player in Victoria's Essendon District and Diamond Valley League, was appointed the Reserves coach.
Moncur, who joined Springwood last season, will remain as head coach in 2007. He came to the club with significant senior football experience in the AFL Queensland Division 1 State League with Mt Gravatt and the Victorian Sunraysia League, and took the club to the top four and the preliminary final in his first season.
Peter Ryan, who played in premiership teams with Glenorchy and North Hobart Clubs in the nineties, went on to co-coach the Bellerive Oval based Clarence Roos to three premierships in Tasmania's Southern Football League. In 2006 as assistant coach, Ryan helped take Brisbane's Yeronga Club to a flag in the AFL Queensland State Association League.
After representing the Calder Cannons and Vic Metro in his youth and winning two premierships with Strathmore as a senior player, the 26 year-old Ben Mihailovic was named Heidelberg West's Best and Fairest player last season. He joins the Pumas as the Club moves to a more youthful Reserves squad in 2007.
Pre-season training will continue to the Christmas break on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6.00pm and with good numbers already attending, the club's players are showing their intentions of having another big season.
Springwood will also field an under 18 team in 2007 should the local players confirm their interest at post-Christmas pre-season training. New players in all grades are most welcome.
