With Coach Malcolm Scholes away through work commitments, Brian James completed this report.....
Old saying... "When the cat's away the mice will play" and boy did they play!
Under the guidance of David (Love Dog) Love and his able assistants the team defeated the previous 2nd spot Hawks by 2 goals in an entertaining game at Ainslie oval 12-6-78 to 10-6--66.
The first qtr was evenly contested with both teams kicking 4 goals. Stats showed in the second qtr that we were dominant in inside 50's , centre breaks and at stoppages thus kicking 5 goals to 2in this qtr. We knew the Hawks would come out with a big effort to peg us back after the long break and this was so .The team didn't give in to the pressure and fought out the game for a well deserved win.
It was a terrific team effort by all the boys as they fought for each other all day, being first to the ball , taking on there opponents and continually backing each other up around the ground. The talking this week was heard all over the ground which was very pleasing to the coaching staff.
It is hard to pick certain players out as it was a terrific team effort but big Ed played his best game of the year. He was everywhere and continually repulsed the hawks attack. Nathan Barb and Richie Lewis were superb in the forward line setting up goals for themselves and other forwards. Jeff James was tasked to keep the 18's leading goal kicker under wraps and did this superbly by keeping him to 1 goal. Ancel Franklin and Joel Fraser made their second best goal kicker earn every kick he got . Matt Renet gave us plenty of drive from the centre as did Ben Spencer. And must not forget to mention the chase, the tackle and resulting free kick to our big ruckman Spida, it was inspirational to all the team.
Lastly I wish to thank the 16s who helped out this week and all contributed to this win, Brady Scholes, Ancel Franklin, Pup Grozinger and Richie Lewis.
