NEWTOWN & Chilwell has capped a dominant season with a 36-point win over Grovedale in the GFL reserve grade grand final.
After an even first term, where the Tigers grabbed a one-point lead, the Eagles jumped clear with a four-goal-to-two second quarter, leading by 16 points at half time.
The minor premier stamped its authority with a 5.6 to 1.1 third quarter, all-but securing Newtown & Chilwell its first reserve grade flag since 2011 and third overall in the GFL.
“We have a lot of young kids in there, and to finish the way we did was amazing,” coach Matt Bruhn, a former Grovedale champion, said.
“We have been on top most of the year, and with a lot of changes week-to-week, so we don’t know what the team’s going to involve.
“But a lot of the time these kids have stayed together.”
Brandon Efthimiou topped off a consistent season by winning the AFL Victoria medal for best-on-ground, while Darcy Troop starred with four goals.
John Leyden and veteran Corey Normington were also busy with two goals apiece, while Tim Brown and Darcy Diment won plenty of the ball.
Former Bell Post Hill star Caleb Bacely was best up forward for Grovedale with four goals, while veteran Nathan Martin worked hard for his three majors.
Jarred Martin, Jake Ross and big man Lachie Headlam battled hard for the Tigers, who also lost last year’s decider to St Joseph’s.
