Last Saturday we headed across to Lord Nelson Park to take on the St Arnaud FC. The Saints were the better side on the day in the first three matches played but our Seniors recorded their second big win in a row, kicking 26 goals for the game. The three key forwards in Joe McGrath, Matt Giri and Cody Gunn kicked 14 between them for the day taking their collective tally to 34 over the past fortnight and 131 for the year so far. James McGrath played his best game so far this season, clunking marks and working hard across half forward while Dean McKay and Kieran Sait continued their reliable defensive work. Nine goals in the second and final terms helped set up the big win. Anthony Judd and Rhys Thompson continue to improve post return from injuries while Tom Finlay’s pace and skills add plenty to the group as does the hard work of Josh Ketterer and Jye Sandiford. In terms of this week and going into finals the group knows from here on in, bodies will need to put on the line and there will be no short cuts or easy balls to be won but the Navies are up for the fight.
The Reserves had plenty of plenty of early play but couldn’t convert against the Saints into the wind in the opening term. The second half saw us outscore the Saints but the damage had been done early with the Saints much more prepared to run in numbers and work hard for each other which saw them open up a handy 28 point lead at the long break. The second half was a better effort by the Navies but as we all know, it takes a four quarter effort to win a game of footy. Our boys will be keen to make amends this week.
In the Under 16’s it was a top of the table clash between the Saints and the Navies. The first half was an even contest with the Navies trailing by two points at the main break. The Saints showed why they are undefeated so far in the last half, kicking six goals to one to inflict a 32 point loss on the Navies. Nathaniel Holmes Brown kicked two goals. The boys will go back to the drawing board and work out ways to improve and challenge sides further as they go into a finals campaign.
The Under 13’s kicked the day off in the fog and again gave their all against a stronger Saints side. A goal each to Elliot Fitzpatrick and Brodie Grylls in the final term mounted a mini comeback but our boys couldn’t match the Saints on this occasion. Jacob Olive, Pat Soulsby, Angus Johnstone, Ned Zagame, Elliot Fitzpatrick and Patrick Sait all impressed.
