Round 16 Match Report - 07/08/2016

Under 13’s

Endeavour SC were the visitors to Trafalgar and both teams started brightly. GFC started to control the match with their opponents relying on the counter attack.

Cory Johnson was a stand out in the midfield that was combining well with the forward line. However, Endeavour flooded their back line and they were difficult to penetrate. Despite the scores being goalless at half time it was an entertaining game.

Gippsland started the second half slowly with their first touch being slightly off but Manny Scarlett forced the Endeavour keeper to pull a fine save and that sparked the hosts back into action.

With ten minutes left on the clock wide man Harrison Meyer dribbled the ball into the box and angled a shot across the goalie to score low into the opposite corner.

One minute later the home team iced the game when a good through ball from Kelsey Dal Pozzo left Jordan Bannister one on one with the keeper and he coolly smashed the ball home.

The 2-0 score line was a deserved reward for the boys against a well drilled opponent. Good movement and composure on the ball audited by admirable patience were the keys to the victory.

The stand out players were Johnson and Dal Pozzo with the back four and midfield all solid contributors.

Under 14’s

The under 14s travelled to 2nd placed Berwick aiming for a win to gain second place on the table.

Gippsland were under pressure in the first 15 minutes and were unable to match the strength, and pace in particular, of the Berwick boys.

Against the run of play Gippsland took the lead when a Connor Dastey cross fell to Jesse Buhagiar whose excellent first touch and finish put Gippsland 1-0 up.

GFC came more into the game and managed to go 2-0 up with a similar goal from the other flank. A Jarrod Ross cross was controlled and finished well by Reuben O'Brien.

After going in at the break 2-0 up Gippsland then controlled the first 15 minutes of the second half. However the game began to change when Berwick got one back and then managed to equalise from a corner with 10 minutes to go.

The game looked to be heading for a draw until Gippsland failed again to deal with another corner and conceded a third in the last minutes to lose 3-2.

Ultimately, it was a disappointing result in the end, but a game that the boys will learn a lot from.

Caleb Semple, Steffen Aboltins and Manny Lual were outstanding for Gippsland FC.

Under 15’s

The under 15’s also played away to Berwick who sat on top of the table. It was a tough afternoon for the boys against very good opposition and to add to their woes they had to deal with a long injury list going into the game.

Berwick led 3-0 at half time. Goalkeeper Ben Elliott made some good saves in the first half, bravely diving at the feet of the strikers on numerous occasions.

The Gippsland boys battled in the second half with the central defensive pairing of Callum Slade and Myles Luders working had to prevent the Berwick strikers from adding to the score. Berwick managed to add a few more in the second half to run out 7-0 winners.

Elliott, Slade and Isaac Boulton were Gippsland’s best on the day.

Under 18’s

Due to a number of school commitments and an ever increasing injury list GFC were unable to fulfil their fixture against Sandringham. Despite the efforts of both clubs to find a suitable date to reschedule the game, this was not an option so the boys had to unfortunately, forfeit the match.

There are no matches this weekend due to a catch up round across the leagues.
