Local readers who watch the A.F.L. football on TV may have noticed the marking ability and goal kicking prowess of a young player who has established himself into the strong Hawthorn triple premiership side. He is twenty one year old James SICILY (Number 21) . James, who plays as a high half-forward, is the grand-son of former Alexandra player Geoff SICILY who played some 86 games with the club between 1964 and ’71. Geoff started in the Reserves in 1964 and was soon promoted to the Senior side playing mostly in defence. Like his grand-son he was a fine mark and good kick. Geoff played with the Rebels until 1967 when he was transferred in his employment (Bank) but returned to play in 1969. His form that season was so good that he was selected in the Waranga League’s Caltex Country Championship team and played in defence against both the Murray and Bendigo League’s that year.
Geoff was from Kanumbra and brother Dennis still lives on the property. Unfortunately Geoff passed away some years back.
