Cannons make Vic Metro!
Story by Tim Michell
KARL Brown and Hayden Blythe both helped Vic Metro make a winning start to the Under-18 National Championships on Monday against Vic Country.
The Cannons pair both finished a thrilling contest with seven disposals as a late goal from Western Jets Daniel Venables settled the game in Metro’s favour.
The Vic Metro side prevailed 14.10 (94) to 14.8 (92) to start their tournament on the perfect note with a win over last year’s champion.
Brown, the only 19-year-old TAC Cup listed player in the Big V squad, booted 1.1 and gathered four kicks and three handballs.
Blythe was effective in the back half of the ground, reeling in two contested marks and five contested possessions in the two-point triumph.
The Metro side is next in action against South Australia at AAMI Stadium this Sunday.
The South Australian side has marked itself as the team to beat in this year’s championships, beating The Allies by 44 points and Western Australia by 27 in its opening two games.
Meanwhile, six Calder under-16s will also don the Big V jumper in this year’s Under-16 National Championships.
Rhylee West (Strathmore), Tye Browning (Craigieburn), Jack Bytel (Aberfeldie), Curtis Taylor (Keilor), Sam Graham (Gisborne) and Shane Skidmore (Kilmore) were all selected in the Metro squad.
Vic Metro plays its first match of the carnival on Sunday, June 26.
