A poor first half by the Northern Knights has resulted in a 28-point loss to the Gippsland Power on Sunday afternoon. Final score of 11.6.72 to 14.16.100.
The Knights had a strong final term to get the margin back to 20 points at one stage in the last quarter before the Power settled to seal the result.
While the Knights had 80 more possessions the Power’s pressure made the use of that extra possession a disadvantage. Coach Andrew Shakespeare praised the Gippsland’s pressure. “Credit to them, pressure around the football was really good, worked us over and made us handball way too much.”
Shakespeare was impressed with the fight in the last quarter when the Knights got it back to twenty points. “We never gave in, we were really pushing to the end.” Although the coach said “We’ve got some real work to do with our skill level, but we are learning, be prepared to take the game on and we’ve got some really good bottom age players coming through.”
Patty Lipinski had his best game for the Knights with 32 disposals and 3 marks and Coach Shakespeare was really impressed by him. “Patrick Lipinski going into the midfield, we are really pleased with how he is coming on.”
Another who impressed today was Chas Roberts the big ruckman had 19 touches and 7 marks and his rucking also pleased the coach.
Mitch Andrews (24 disposals, 5 marks) , Corey McKay (26 disposals, 3 goals) and Ben Patterson 13 disposals, 1 goal and 7 marks) also impressed Shakespeare.
“Mitch Andrews is playing some really good football, Corey McKay played really well, playing a new role, putting some impact on the scoreboard. Patterson up forward took some marks.”
Plenty of positives out of today as we look forward to next week against the Western Jets at Burbank Oval on Sunday.
