Match Review Highlights - Seniors go 7-0 - Reserves hit the four for the first time - Under 19s back on the winners list - Colts win a thriller Match Reviews Seniors Mazenod (6-0) faced a determined Oakleigh (1-5) on the weekend, and after a tight first half, the Nodders kicked away to win by 33 points. The Nodders were very good kicking with the wind in the first, but Oakleigh’s potent forward line made the most of limited opportunities to keep them within 22 points at the first change. Both teams attacked in the second, with Oakleigh chipping away at the deficit late in the quarter to get within 5 points at the long break. With the game in the balance at the start of the second half, leaders, Tim Bourbon and Rob Mann came to the fore. The defensive effort also lifted with Steve Oldman winning every one-on-one against one of the competition’s leading forwards. A class goal from Damian Byrne late in third gave Mazenod a 29-point lead, which seemed like it might just be enough, but Oakleigh were still very much in the game with the wind at their backs in the last. Fortunately, the Nodders clamped down even harder and actually outscored their opponents against the win to claim a hard-fought win. Brad Kovac continued his outstanding season with two goals and a near-BOG effort. He was only denied by Tim Bourbon, who kicked three goals and looks to be back to the form that saw him win the competition best and fairest in 2013. Josh White added the 3 votes to his 2 goals while Thomas Odrowaz provided great support all day. Mazenod OC 1.5-11 5.10-40 10.12-72 16.19-115 Oakleigh AFC 3.3-21 3.3-21 4.3-27 7.5-47 Goal Kickers: J. Matt Sier returned to the side after a lengthy stint in the seniors and kicked three goals. Jacob Murdock also kicked three and continues to press for senior selection, but it was Jack Minack who claimed the BOG honour. Fortunately, they made it worthwhile with a thrilling 2-point win. The Nodders had the better of the opening half and held a 20-point lead at the long break. However, Parade came out firing in the third and cut the margin to four points at the final change. In a tense, low-scoring final quarter, the Nodders did just enough to win and move to 5-2. Sheldon Connolly notched up another BOG while Lachlan McKenna and Arlyn Khaiyath were also very good. James Deegan slotted the winner on the buzzer.
