Matt Perry made his VFL debut on the weekend in the Northern Blues 11-point win over their rivals Coburg at Preston City Oval on Sunday. The Blues lead at every change to take a 16. 10. (106) to 14. 11. (95) win.
It was a special day for the Blues as club legend Brent Bransgrove playedhis 100th and final VFL game in front of a very strong home ground.
Perry said it was the perfect way to send off the club legend.
“To get a win and stand in the middle of the circle with Boxy was obviously a fitting way to send him off as a champion of the club, so well done to the boys for doing that.”
In his first game ‘Pez’ had 12 disposals and 5 marks and after a slow start says he felt a bit more composed as the game went on.
“I was a little slow early, got caught with the footy a couple of times but after that I got my hands on the footy a bit more and the boys were really good at feeding the ball out to me, so as the game went on a felt a bit more comfortable.”
Perry said there was a huge difference playing in the VFL compared to the TAC Cup.
“It’s obviously a lot quicker and the skills are a lot more elite so it was tough to adjust but sort of felt like I got there in the end. You’ve got all these AFL listed players, who are pushing for selection, the depth of players is really good and everyone just plays their role.”
While the difference was huge, he took some valuable lessons out of his first game for the Blues and hopes there will be more to come.
“The opportunity to play against some really good players and play with some good players, they teach you a lot so it was a really good lesson…. hopefully I can prove to the recruiters that I can play against some of the bigger bodies and come into this side and play a role and hopefully in the next couple of weeks I get another opportunity to do so.”
