Marlins Flying High

Marlins Flying High

Tweed United are soaring after three wins to begin the season. The Marlins’ sit on top of the BLK 1 standings, the Gold Coast’s second tier competition. Top spot in the division brings with it automatic promotion to the Gold Coast Premier League, the region’s top competition.

The Marlins are on fire in front of goal, scoring an average of five goals a game. The most recent result, a 6-2 victory away to Runaway Bay. Goal scorers included Matthew Noble (2), Cory Langdale (2), Caolan Collett (1) and Brett Draman(1). In previous weeks United dispatched of Nerang and Southport and are building each week.

The performance was somewhat soured with a knee injury to boom defender Ryan Needham in the 10th minute. Assistant Coach Nathan Mulhearn is confident other players will fill the void left by Needham. ‘Ryan has been fantastic for us this season and has the potential to go a long way in the game, hopefully he has a swift recovery. However, it opens the door for another player to step up and produce. We have a good squad with more depth than we have had in the past.’ One of the players who could return to action is Daniel Lesslie who returned to the reserves last week after recovering from his own knee injury.

United will not have everything their own way this Saturday at Arkinstall Park when they host the Gold Coast Knights. The Knights are also unbeaten this year with two draws and registered their first win last weekend with a 7-0 victory against Merrimac. Star striker Daniel Grzic will be a handful after scoring a hat trick against the Macs. ‘Grzic is a handful, he has all the skills and his ability would allow him to play a few levels above our league if he desired. The Knights have recruited well, so Grzic won’t be the only threat. We will focus on our game, believe in what we do and hopefully it’s enough to get the job done’ said Mulhearn.

The Reserve Grade are also flying high. Sitting equal second with Saturday’s opponents after winning two out of their three games. Prolific striker Keegan Staff is leading the way with nine of the sides 17 goals so far this campaign. They will be facing a Knights side who beat them in the Preseason Cup.

The action kicks-off at 1.45pm with the reserve grade and the main game at 4pm. Entrance to Arkinstall Park is via Kirkwood Road.
