Last week our Seniors and Reserves Footballers got off to a positive start with wins over last years Premiers, St Arnaud. Aaron Walklate again led from the front through the middle and new recruit Cody Gunn chipped in with five majors for the day. Another five goals between the McGrath boys capped off a good forward line performance while our defence was well led by Dean McKay and Rhys Thompson. Several desperate smothers on the day was a highlight from our backline.
The Reserves played good team football to run out 42 point winners under new coach Jake Lanyon. Ryan Moloney and Tyson Watton were rock solid down back while Zane Sullivan, Kris Clifford, Nigel Williams, Matt Noonan and Bryce Heeps were all busy. The Reserves still have a few players to return and their depth is a healthy sign for the Navy Blues, putting healthy pressure on our Senior boys performances each week.
Our under 16’s played out a thriller but went down by a goal against the Saints. For the Dooley Thompson coached Under 16’s,Connor Lee and Nathaniel Holmes Brown scored three majors each and were named amongst the best along with Z. Tauali I, Marcus Campbell, Will Fitzpatrick and Jed Thompson.
The Under 13’s also played out a nailbiter against the Saints. The junior Navy Blues showed how much they have improved, kicking five goals, 3 off the boot of Hugh Sait. They led for much of the day before getting pipped by 8 points. Jackson Zagame also kicked 2 goals and along with Hugh was amongst the busier players on the day. Nick Thompson, Paddy Sait, Caileb Good and Bailey Dixon all played good games in a great team performance.
