Hi Bomber Fans!
Round 2 is done and won for the Bombers after a real arm wrestle of a match against Coffs Harbour Breakers at Fripp Oval on Saturday.
The first quarter was a tight content. Kris Davis was once again dominant in the ruck, setting the tone for the contests. The mid-fields were evenly match early in the game with Rory Walton and Joe Ward work hard to work off the clearences. Both Teams made the goals that were scored hard to come by, but some wayward shooting meant that the Bombers went in to the first break just trailing the Breakers - Ballina 2-5-17 to Coffs 3-2-30.
The second quarter was stronger for Ballina with the defensive network really aiming up and keeping the Coffs attack at bay. The combined might of Bart, Macca, Mick, Luke, Channah & Chook were like a wall holding the Breakers to one major and one minor for the quarter. Te pressure was outstanding and the counter attack saw Rowan Fajerman picking up a couple of his 3 goal total. Sam Kennedy seemed to be everywhere across the Wing as he defended then counter attacked. The boys went in the major break with a small break in the tight struggle - Ballina 5-8-38 to Coffs 4-3-27.
The third quarter, however, was all the Breakers. They took advantage of some fatigue and excellent ball control and delivery to step up on their execution. The Bombers were still able to execute some solid strings that resulted in two more majors for the term and ensure that at the three quarter siren there was nothing in it on the score board. But the quarter very much belonged to the Breakers - Ballina 7-9-51 to Coffs 8-4-52.
The final quarter Ballina returned to the field with a renewed sense of purpose an dominated much of the run of play. Leigh Hair, Will Ward, Roy Dunnet and the Cornwell brothers really made a point of the 1 percenters and made great space for the mid-field to once again control the park and deliver in to the forward line over and over. The quarter could have been a blow out for the Bombers if not for a return to the wayward boot of the first quarter. While they only added two more majors they managed to rack up seven minors. In opposition the Breakers were held to a single goal for the final term. The final score:
Ballina 9-16-70
Lismore 9-4-58
Goal Kickers - Rowan Fajerman 3; Tim Price 2; Rory Walton 2; Nick Lohman 1; Will Ward 1.
Best Players - Rory Walton, Simon Thorsen, Rowan Fajerman, Tim Price, Colin O'Brien, Joe Ward.
In the second game of the double header THe Byron Bay Magpies put the Sawtell/Toormina Saints to the sword with a crushing 17-10-112 to 2-1-13 lock out.
Next week see the Bombers heading to Pottsville to take on the Tweed Coast Tigers for the first time this season. The game will start at 2:00pm and the boys would love to see as much support as possible on this trip up north!
Go Bombers!
