Saints 23-20-158 def Roos 7-5-47
In what was billed as the clash of the year the clinical Roos were pitted against the high flying Saints in Inverell. Like most teams the Roos did not travel all that well and had some players out/missing, but were still given a fair touch up by the Saints who are at there strongest when at home. The Roos were very clinical in disposing of the Bulldogs last weekend in the duble header, while the Saints pulverised the Swans, so this game should have been a close one. After a competitive start to the game which saw the first 10 minutes being ptetty close, the Saints then took control of the game and slipped away to lead at the first break by 30 points. From there on in the piled on the goals, kicking 5 to the Roos 1 in the second quarter to lead comfortably by 60 at half time. After the break the Roos found a bit of form and put on 3 goals but couldn't match the Saints who added 4 to their total as well. The last quarter saw the Saints finish it off with six majors while the Roos were kept scoreless. For the Saints Alex Walker kicked 5 goals and their were multiple multiple goal scorers. BOG (Best On Ground) for the Saints was their on-fire forward Alex Walker. For the Roos Plugger Abbot kikced 2 goals as did Ash Cruickshank and Daniel Johnson was BOG for the Roos.
Nomads 14-12-96 def Bulldogs 11-6-72
In Armidale the Bulldogs put in a gutsy effort against the Nomads to only lose the game in the last 10 minutes of the final quarter, pushing the Nomads all the way. Travelling with only 16 players and losing one to a kne injury 10 minutes into the third quarter should have given the Nomads a landslide win at home, as they had a full bench to run the legs off the Dogs. Traditionally slow starters the Dogs got away with the first goal of the day and put in a good 1st quarter to lead at quarter time by 4 points. The 2nd quarter saw the Nomads fight back with some good goals, but the Dogs still held a slender 1 point lead going into the main break. In the third quarter the Dogs were down to 15 men after losing Dave Viddovic to a knee injury. The Nomads should have run away with it at this point but plucky defence and hard goes at the footy kept the Dogs in the game. Weight of numbers began to tell though and the Nomads took the lead going into the last break up by 11 points. The Dogs kept going in the last quarter but couldn't hold off the Nomads and with a couple of late goals expanding the margin to 24 points in a game that there was never more than 2 goals in all day. Bulldogs coach Doug Garnett said " I was realy proud of the boys today. Everyone was in every contest and we really made the Nomads earn the win. Playing for 45 minutes with 15 guys was a gutsy effort". For the Dogs Aaron Froud kicked 6 goals in a BOG perfomance and Steve Reid added 2 as well. For the Nomads Glen "Norm" Northway kicked 4 and Hamish Roberston was BOG.
