A number of the Eastlake Women’s team will take part in the AFL Canberra Women’s Gala Day today looking to secure a spot in the Female Academy Program for the 2016 to enhance the prospects of being a part of the inaugural 2017 AFL Women’s League.
Players including Melissa Johnson, Kasie Nugent, Jenna Linehan, Rohana Prince, Sally Seabrook and Hannah Gill have all been training with the Academy program with a view of being a part of the future Women’s League.
“The league here in Canberra has been strong for the past few years so spots in the program are going to be tough to secure. However, I’m looking forward to the Gala Day as we all look to put our hand up to be part of the Academy program,” said Gill.

“The AFL has confirmed there will be 8 teams next year in the National League. I would definitely would love to be part of it, as would all of the girls.”
For Seabrook who only took up the game last season after switching from Netball, it is another opportunity of the game.
“I have really enjoyed being a part of the training sessions. Having only started last year I have been able to develop my skills and I’m really excited to give the National League for 2017 a go,” said Seabrook.
Football Manager Stephen Soulsby believes the Academy will further develop the talent in the Canberra region.
“The feedback from the girls involved has been incredibly positive. Women’s sport has grown significantly over the past 2-3 years so to see the AFL now making a major investment in the Women’s game is great to see,” said Soulsby.
“It can only improve the talent pool and grow the game in Canberra, so it’s a win-win for all the Club’s.”
The Club has also had 10 youth girls looking to be included in the youth Academy program.
Games will commence at 9am and Youth Girls at 1pm.
