Sat 21st April- I arrived at the ground today in a state of confusion. Falling from the sky was this clear liquid resembling rain. I mean I know Heidelberg have money behind them, but also the power of rain? Even Shorty's young one looked up to him and said "Dad whats this?" Being only two years old he had never seen rain before.
Of course there was no U/19 game, Heidelberg can find water tanks, can get new jumpers, can buy Murphy, Franchina and McKernan, not to mention everyone else and they can even wear shirts claiming "its us against them", but for some reason they just cant be bothered investing in 19's. It's a cruel world, but at least we were able to have the young guys from our team play against a self proclaimed "superpower", and it was a great learning experience.
The seconds game was not one you would brag about, but at the same time it has been a long time that conditions like these have been played in. It should be viewed that the weekends game was infact a training run in wet weather conditions. Unfortunately Heidelberg played the conditions better and although the scoreboard showed a big loss the Monty boys got alot from the game. New player Jessie Elley had a cracking first up game for Mont and I have no doubt he is one to watch. Other good efforts must be said of Scott Pepyat, Pat Cusack, Gates, Webster and Cesari. Lets hope that this game brings everyone closer to that first victory in round 1.
The Senior game was a mixed bag. There were at least 5 arsy goals by Heidelberg off the ground, but then you make your own luck so good on them. We struggled up front without the "guns", but that can be no excuse. Like Heidelberg, we should have been kicking it long into dangerous spots and waiting for a bit of lady luck, rather than trying to pin point short passes when its pissing down. But as mentioned before it was a training run for wet weather football.
There were some highlights, Gutterson showed that even in wet conditions he can still pick up one handed at full tilt, he also showed us why you dont bounce the ball in the wet. Kyle Vann tried to swallow a pass from Gutterson that nearly took his head clean off. From the boundary you could hear the slap of leather on skin, followed by raucous laughter from everyone, then sudden wonder if he was ok. No worries, he was ok, just a bit of wounded pride.
Peter Moore had the job in the ruck early on, and while Gay is imposing to the best of ruckmen in the league, poor Moorey at only 18 years old must have wondered if playing seniors was all its cracked up to be. To his credit he kept going giving a contest at every tap, including some good wins. Other youngsters such as Trajanovski and Hunt also played well in the wet conditions.
So overall we didnt win the day, Heidelberg proved that cheque book football can still prevail in the suburbs, but then they dont want just to win every game, they want a massacre every game to prove they are too good for our league and enhance the chance they will be successful in their bid to join the EFL. Good luck to them, but we will keep it real. Go Monty.
