Charlton FC Results v Boort FC 22/8/15.
Finals bound! Two Charlton football sides have earnt themselves a finals opportunity with the Under 16’s finishing the year in fourth spot while a big win in the Seniors has ensured Charlton a 2nd semi final spot after the Navy Blues leapt from fourth spot on the ladder into second on the back of a percentage boosting win.
Highlights from Saturday included Darren Good playing his 350th game for Charlton. ‘Keg’ scored a goal and was a good contributor in the Reserves big win. The under 16’s kicked 25 goals in a great display of team oriented football that will test opposition sides in the spring weather. The under 13’s finished off their year with as much dedication as they started, again giving their all. Saturday night the Social rooms were packed with the Netball ‘5’ premiership reunions and the CFC 2005 Premiership reunion. All the past coaches and players spoke extremely well and the event was a great success. Thanks to all the organisers, cooks, bar staff and kitchen volunteers who were kept extremely busy!
The seniors were jumped early by Boort on Saturday, conceding the first two goals of the game. From then on clearances began to go the Navy Blues way through the output of Aaron Walklate, Mark Vigus and Andrew Hooper who played his first game for Charlton while off duty for North Ballarat. The Navies managed to kick ten goals in the first term with a couple coming off the boot of Anthony Judd, a more than welcome return after a long injury lay off. Another key player returning to the Seniors after injury was Joe McGrath who was took some strong grabs and hit the contests hard, creating opportunities for himself and the likes of Vigus, Judd and Zane Sulivan.
Hooper was having an outstanding game on the ball and up forward, creating his own scoring chances and capitilising on them. Meanwhile Rhys Thompson again put on a classic display of defensive football, punching the ball well clear of his opponent from behind in marking contests, and then, more often than not gathering the football and turning defence immediately into attack.
Boort remained competitive at most stages throughout the game but their younger players were just outclassed on Charlton Park Saturday.
The importance of Mark Vigus to the team was again highlighted yesterday with his five goals but equally his tough in and under work, tackling and ‘one percenters’. Zane Sullivan displayed plenty of these qualities too. Luke Kyriakides gathered plenty of the ball in his balanced and creative manner and Ben Walklate used his football nouse and deadly left foot kick to maximum advantage for the Navy Blues.
The Navy Blues were able to turn a 111 point advantage at the last break into a 166 point win with, like the first term, a ten goal quarter in the final term. This big win gave us enough percentage to take second spot on the ladder as Donald suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of St Arnaud.
This win has given Charlton a good opportunity. It is now up to Charlton to seize that opportunity.
