After conceding the first two goals, the Eagles ran rampant to chalk up an impressive victory and secure sixth on the ladder.
“It was a good win. We had five injuries and we lost (Dan) Feery this morning,” Wojcinski said.
“He had a knock that didn’t quite come up, so he pulled out before the game. So to have Robbie (Condy) and Feery out — our two premier guys in the midfield — didn’t help.
“We also had a couple of guys out of the backline, but the guys were brought in today were fantastic. Harry Dolley and Cameron Fowler were fantastic. They came in and played their role really well.
“They really stood up and that means a lot for the older boys in the side.”
The win came at a cost though, with Peter Trompf to face the AFL Barwon tribunal after being reported for striking.
Trompf was booked by two umpires for his alleged strike on Saint Andrew Banjanin in the third quarter at Elderslie Reserve.
“There was a ruck contest, the ball went up and the ruckman threw his elbow back and cleaned him up,” St Mary’s coach Bryce Vincent said post match.
“He’s got a big black eye and obviously couldn’t take any further part in the game. We don’t know officially what is wrong but the trainer said he wasn’t right to go back on.
“It’s pretty disappointing, but the guy has been reported by the boundary and the goal umpire.
“He was playing well for us, and for him to be taken out of the game, is quite disappointing.”
Banjanin was assessed by trainers but did not go to hospital.
“They were a little bit worried about his cheek but at this stage he won’t go to hospital. They will monitor it,” Vincent said.
The Saints booted the first two majors of the clash — and match the Eagles with four goals apiece in the final term — but Vincent wasn’t impressed.
“Our last quarter was OK but the game was gone, to be honest,” Vincent said.
“I think we took a step back from where we have been in the last couple of weeks. Our pressure, intensity and workrate has been really good, and it’s been led by the younger blokes in the team, and we came into the game thinking we were a good chance to win and we didn’t do any of those things.”
