On Sunday 26th July the Northern Knights hosted the Dandenong Stingrays in Round 14 of the TAC Cup at Preston City Oval. The match started out very tight with side’s defences’ well on top early. Eventually the deadlock was broken by the Stingrays with long goal from outside 50. Although the Knights then dominated general play and had a number of Inside 50’s they were unable to score a goal and when Dandenong added a late goal they held a thirteen point advantage at quarter time. Scoring opened up in the second quarter as both sides began to adjust to the swirling conditions. Matt Perry goaled on the run following a turnover to open the Knights account and this was followed by majors to Bailey Jordan & Sam Peet. The Stingrays however were also damaging up forward adding a further four goals in the term to extend their lead out to 21 points by half time. The Knights came out after the long break full of running and began to up the tempo. First gamer Steven Fitzgerald created some opportunities and scored two goals with Michael Ercolano and Brayden Fiorini also finished off their chances to bring the margin back to under a goal. A late goal on the three quarter time siren from Dandenong broke the Knights momentum and the Stingrays took a more comfortable nine point lead into the final stanza. Unfortunately a number of missed opportunities plagued the Knights in the final term with players missing some very gettable shots at goal. Dandenong on the other hand capitalised on their chance inside 50 and held on to win by 18 points.
Michael Ercolano was again very good in the midfield for the Knights, while Jade Gresham playing a more forward role was again amongst the better players. Tyrone Leonardis continued his great form since returning from Vic Metro duty and along with Matt Perry & Kieran Malone stood up for Northern throughout the match. Bottom age player Mason Blakey was again very solid in defence and showed some positive signs for next season with his attack from half back.
This week the Northern Knights host the Oakleigh Chargers again at Preston City Oval on Sunday 2nd August. With a number of players returning from AGSV commitments the Knights will be confident of keeping up their recent good form and hopefully breaking through for a victory.
