In what turned out to be a very timely night to be off the training track with all the rain on Tuesday, the boys ventured down to the Karting Madness indoor kart centre to race for the MFC Grand Prix.
Two heats were to decide the fastest driver and the winner would take home the Trophy. An added bonus was a visit from Steve Richards, three-time Bathurst winner and current Porsche Cup champion. Steve also partners Craig Lowndes in the Enduros at Sandown, Bathurst and Gold Coast.
Steve gave the boys a few tips on karting and while the boys seemed to take the advice onboard, all they wanted was that inaugural GP trophy.
The first heat saw some fast times being put down by Jake and Lockie and as the tyres were heating up times were dropping dramatically.
The big fellas in Sean and Ryan were doing their best with the weight penalities but could not bridge the gap to the lighter pilots. Cheesy was doing his best impression of a speedhump and getting in everyone’s way and as a race car driver, he makes a bloody good footballer. Stick to the footy Ben! In the end Cal came through with a time that no one could beat to be the fastest in Heat 1.
Heat 2 saw the remaining competitors attempt to better Cal's time of 41.988. Scotty was out on a Sunday drive and not bothering the time keepers and along with Cheesy looks to need some private practice before next year's event.
Young Richo Jnr was cutting good laps to be up with the leaders, but it was Jayden Bishop who came through with a time that would see him better Cal with a 41.500. During this heat there were murmurings that these guys had the advantage of going out with warm tyres and was unfair to the first group. A protest was lodged by one competitor (Cal) and a 3 lap decider was arranged to crown the inaugural MFC GP winner.
Steve Richards joined in to keep the guys honest.
The crowd gathered to watch with interest and all eyes were on the two guns competing for this very prestigious trophy that is highly regarded in the motorsport industry. A standing start led to some tight racing until Bisho was confused with his capabilities and ambition, grazed the tyre wall and lost too much time to make up to Cal who sprinted off into the distance to take out the 2015 MFC GP and the winners Cheque of $50!
Unfortunately the race did not match the hype surrounding it and we look forward to next year.
Thanks to the Karting Madness crew for a fun night and we'll return with gusto for the 2016 event.
