CHARLTON FC RESULTS V BIRCHIP WATCHEM 11/7/15.
The Navy Blues seniors were able to prevail over Birchip Watchem on Saturday to the tune of 13 points in wintry, slippery conditions at Charlton Park.
Birchip were able to win the contested possessions early in the first term and gain some forward entries which resulted in them holding a five point lead at the first break. For Charlton, Mark Vigus was at his livewire best early and Daniel Thiesz, Kyriakides, Aaron Walklate were collecting plenty of touches for the Navy Blues. The second term saw us start to really get on top with the backline repelling most Bulls entries and counter attacks coming from McKay, Sait (back in the side for his first game of 2015), Winsall, McLean and Thompson. At the siren for the main break, Vigus kicked his third to give us a 3 point lead at half time and plenty of belief.
The third term was the standout for the Charlton side, with our boys able to kick 3.3 and hold the Bulls scoreless for the term. James Baird and Ben Walklate were dominating across half back, dragging in some contested grabs like a dry September day instead of the Antarctic like conditions which prevailed throughout the game. Vigus and D Thiesz continued to cause the Bulls plenty of headaches up forward as they both got on the scoreboard again when their team mates such as Rhys Thompson, Humm and Walklate got the ball into dangerous spots, deep and quick at the canteen end. At the final break we held an 18 point lead.
The final term was a see sawing event with Navy Blue supporters feeling the nerves as Birchip again mounted an attack. A free in their forward line gave them the first of two which brought the margin back to six points and awoke the Bulls supporters.
Charlton were able to gain a handy behind and then Daniel Thiesz took the mark of the day by climbing high, holding his position and taking a speccy on his chest. The skipper subsequently goaled to put the game out of the Bulls reach and the Navy Blues back into third position on the ladder. A great win in trying conditions by the CFC.
