On Saturday 4th of July the Northern Knights travelled up the Hume Freeway to Wangaratta to take on the Murray Bushrangers in Round 12 of the TAC Cup.
Overcast and still conditions greeted the boys as they arrived by bus and the weather remained that way throughout the match. After conceding the first two goals the Knights were able to steady and get on the scoreboard through Matt Perry and then followed up with another to Chas Roberts shortly after. Murray however, was able to wrestle back the ascendancy and scored two more quick goals just before quarter time to give them a twelve point lead. The Knights pressure was much better in the second quarter and the move of Bailey Jordan to defence helped to repel the Bushrangers attacks. Connor Dalgleish was able to mark and goal for Northern which was backed-up by another goal from Michael Ercolano on the run to close the margin. Ivan Soldo’s goal following a free kick in the goal square late in the half gave the Knights a slender one point lead at the main break. The game opened up further in the third quarter as both sides traded goal with nether able to break away and gain a significant advantage. Two goals towards the end of the term from Mitch Hill who was moved forward put the Knights up by eight points at the final change. It was Murray though who came out of the blocks quickly in the last stanza with three quick goals to open up a two goal lead. Answering goals for Northern came from Kieran Malone and Ivan Soldo to level the scores. Unfortunately the Bushrangers scored again and were able to hold the Knights attacks at bay for the rest of the quarter and win by just six points.
Darcy Macpherson was again very good for Northern in the midfield, while Kieran Malone kept up his impressive recent form. Bailey Jordan was very good after being moved into defence and Matt Perry who returned from Vic Metro commitments slotted seamlessly back into the midfield.
This week the Northern Knights host the Eastern Ranges at Preston City Oval on Sunday 12th July starting at 11:00am. We hope the boys can continue their recent run of good performances and post a win back at our home ground.
