No. 6: Basil Flynn
Career highlights: Flynn was famed for his quickness and toughness, with the ability to break games open. If there was a must-win centre clearance, you’d back Flynn in to win it. He took game-saving marks in defence, would run instinctively to create options and knew where the goals were. Flynn captained the club to its most recent premiership in 1986 and was a multiple interleague representative player over his 181-game career. Multiple premiership player, 1985 Mathieson medallist and three-time best and fairest winner during a dominant 1980s era.
No. 26: Mark Hall
Career highlights: A tall, skilled, laconic run-and-carry left footer who seemed to have time on his hands. He lead by example by his actions rather than the spoken word. He played onball, forward and on a wing and defended later in his career. A regular interleague representative who could read the play well due to his great footy sense. He captained the club to the 1982 premiership and won three club best-and-fairests in over 210 classy games.
No. 28: Leigh Crichton
Career highlights: Long-time observers at Newtown say Crichton was as close to the complete package you could get — tall, athletic, quick with good endurance. He was a fierce competitor who could play in almost every position on the ground but did most of his damage at centre half-forward and centre half-back. A high flying, strong mark, he often took spectacular grabs and backed it up with his powerful on-field leadership and was unflinching in putting his body on the line. Three premierships over 141 games.
No. 42: Gary Kelly
Career highlights: A strong, powerful forward who played at centre half-forward and also ruck rover. Not the quickest, but was one of the hardest players to out mark because of his formidable frame. Tellingly, Kelly who was a central figure in the Eagles' long-kicking game style of the 1980s, was a big game player who was best on ground in the 1982 premiership and captained the 1985 flag. Finished with 108 games and a best and fairest to go alongside two flags.
