Another North Shore Success Story
There’s many stories about players who have learnt their footy at North Shore before testing themselves at high levels of the game and Lachlan Hayres is in the process of creating another one.
Hayres made his Premier Division debut at North Shore in early 2013, and he played regularly for the seniors over the next two seasons. He also played in last year’s Under 19s Grand Final, and several strong performances during the season played a big role in getting the young Bombers into the season decider.
Still only 18 and with the future ahead of him, Hayres moved to Melbourne this year and joined VFL club Sandringham. In the first half of the season he has played with the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup alongside former Rams team-mate Tyler Roos; and in the VFL Development side with former North Shore team-mate Jack Davis.
His good form in Sandringham’s TAC Cup and VFL Development teams saw Hayres selected in the Zebras’ senior team to make his VFL senior debut last Sunday.
Lining up in a team that featured 20 current or former AFL listed players against one that contained 17 current listed players, Hayres made an instant impression, looking comfortable in his new surroundings as Sandringham recorded a thrilling three-point win over defending premiers Footscray at Trevor Barker Oval.
After the game Hayres said “It was a great win for the team! The speed and physicality of the game and the intensity of the final 10 minutes I have never experienced before. It gives me a great understanding of what’s required and a platform to continue to develop my craft”.
After a solid first-up effort, VFL watchers can expect to see more of Hayres in the VFL this season.
