Late Naraghi brace rescues draw for Under 13 girls

It was a tale of two halves as Lara overturned a 2-0 half time deficit. Having lost their first three games 2-1, Lara were desperate for a result however going down early brought a sense of dejavu. Determination drove the girls from 2-0 down with ten minutes remaining to 2-2 by full time.

The previous three weeks had shown that Lara was a dominant force that any opposition should be worried about despite not getting the deserved results. The game started as expected, Lara created numerous dangerous chances yet conceded a few as well. Grace Ranner was desperate not to be the first keeper to concede on the day, making 4 big saves early that were otherwise usually certain goals. However, Surfside did eventually score and put the pressure firmly on Lara to make the next move. Lara continued to push through the middle, hitting the post and barely missing before the ball was sent down the other end and easily converted to give Surfside a 2-0 lead.

2-0 down at half time meant an attacking strategy was necessary as Lara shifted to 3 defenders. 3 individual goal scorers, Lily Stein, Erin and Taylah Eastway, from the previous 3 fixtures, were all treated as attacking threats in the second half. Chance after chance arrived and wasn't taken by Lara throughout the second half as Surfside struggled to move the ball out of their defensive half. On 48 minutes, Jasmine Naraghi was substitued on the field and 4 minutes later, she'd scored what seemed would be a consolation goal, weaving through a packed defence to slot past the goal keeper. With only the 4 minutes left, a 4th 2-1 loss in as many weeks looked inevitable, but the desperation never dropped and the true character of the players shone through as Stein ran the ball half the length down the wing, creating a 2 on 1 opportunity with Naraghi and an opposition defender. Stein lay the ball off to Naraghi who was in metres of space, with her second touch, guided the ball in to the top right corner to the delight of the travelling crowd.

Lara's efforts over the previous month were finally rewarded with a more than convincing performance in a 2-2 draw that set the benchmark for performance. Next week Lara play Bell Park at home.
