The last week has been a historic week in the history of Whitefriars College, the death of Fr Vincent Noel Kierce O.Carm has been a terribly sad occasion with so many of us who just wanted to have that one more meeting with the great man. But alas it was not to be. The term legend has been used across many forums to describe Noel, it seems apt. However a term used by Tony Coghlan at the Football Club’s commemoration really struck with me, “iconic”.
For the footy club he was exactly that. He provided the impetus and resources to establish the club, putting it on the likes of John Selkirk, Rex Ablett, Kevin Battersby, John Santamaria and more to get this thing going. Life was not easy for the club early, whilst laden with talent mostly recruited by Noel, there were challenges in providing facilities for a senior club. As described by John Selkirk and Tony, Noel was the one who made sure all impediments were removed. We now boast an oval that is the one of the best in the competition and clubrooms that are a second home to many! As his appearances at games in recent years diminished, word did quickly spread when Noel was attending. Invariably most of the Friars crowd were around him.
We have lost our patron but are so appreciative of the legacy he has provided. He will remain forever an iconic figure at our club and across the college community.
Noel Kierce we thank you and may you Rest in Peace
