Kmart Bairnsdale’s 2013 Wishing Tree Appeal is being backed by the Lindenow Football and Netball Club.
Players, coaches and supporters are set to donate toys gathered as part of the club’s inaugural Christmas Toy Drive and Family BBQ to the Appeal.
The event is being held next month on Sunday, December 8 at Amy Shand Park from 12noon. The club is working with Kmart, the Salvation Army and the community to ensure a happier Christmas for local children and families who are doing it tough.
Representing the club at Kmart Bairnsdale today, senior coach Paul Carroll and club secretary Bronwyn Evans, launched the toy drive with the support of Kmart store admin manager Yvette Westfield and Steven Haworth from the Salvation Army.
“As a family club we’re always looking for ways we can provide extra support to the local community, especially to those who may be struggling a bit,” Carroll said.
“After some brainstorming, we came up with the idea of a toy drive and there were no better organisations to partner with to get the best result for the community than Kmart and the Salvation Army through the annual Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal.
“We’ve had a positive response from the playing group so far and we’ve also got the support of the Lindenow Lions Club and local businesses, so we’re hoping for a big crowd and some nice weather.
“Club supporters and members of the community are welcome to attend and we ask that they dig deep and bring a present of no more than $20 which will be provided to local families in need this Christmas.”
Six million gifts have been donated Australia-wide since the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal was established 26 years ago with nearly 450,000 gifts distributed by the Salvation Army in 2012.
The target for 2013 is 500,000 gifts and anyone can place a present under the Wishing Tree at any Kmart store up until Christmas Eve.
