What a pleasant surprise to wake to sunshine on Sunday morning. Made a nice change from the previous two weeks of pouring rain.
The day started early for me arriving at the ground at 7.30 to open up for our Mighty Under 9 White boys and Girls who kicked off proceedings at 8.30 on the top oval, while the Blue and Red teams headed out to South Morang. We also had teams heading to Research, Laurimar, Keon Park, Eltham and Whittlesea - which is where I found myself late on Sunday afternoon.
For those of you who don’t know me that well, I have 3 boys playing at the Roosters in Under 9’s, 13’s & 15’s. With a large time gap between the under 9’s and the 13’s game on Sunday, I got a chance to take in a few of the other home games on Sunday. Standing on the hill on the top oval gave me a good view of both grounds.
It was great to see the commitment and effort put in by all the teams I watched play. The scoreboard may not have been friendly in some instances, but the commitment never waned.
Grading games can be quite difficult for the older groups at times and can result in some one sided affairs. As I write this the NFL are busy looking at results, etc. and will release the grading outcomes later in the week. So stay tuned to find out if you’re going up a grade, down a grade or staying put.
The draw for the under 9’s, 10’s and both girl’s teams are locked in, so you can put those dates in your diaries. Once the grading is released by the NFL, they will release the draw for round 5 and beyond.
History tells us that this is open to change, so don’t lock the games in as yet as last minute tinkering takes place right up to Friday and sometimes beyond. Your coaches and team managers will make sure you have the right information on your games.
Arriving back at JE Moore park on Sunday night, I was blown away by the number of people at the rooms for our pizza night. Well done to the organisers on a great job and Special Thanks to Luke McKenna from the Seniors who stepped behind the bar “for 10 minutes” to help out and remained two hours later… (and Dooga of course).
You can catch Luke in action this Saturday when the Roosters travel to Montmorency in another big clash for the Seniors. For those that came down on Saturday you were treated to a classic as our boys came from behind to claim the scalp of the previously undefeated Heidelberg.
Leading from the front was our very own under 16 coaches Adam and Daniel Valeri. These young men may be short in stature, but trust me they are big in heart and a great example of what our club is about. Both boys played juniors at the club, are now playing regular senior football and giving back to the junior side by giving up their time to coach the under 16’s. Well Done, Boys.
Trust me if you have not taken in a senior game, get along. The standard’s great and makes for a very enjoyable afternoon’s entertainment.
Auskick also started up again on Saturday with a new co-ordinator taking the reins. A big thanks to another of our junior coaches Abbie Galea who has taken over the responsibility to run the program and also to the parents who have volunteered to help Abbie out, Thank you. Many hands make light work.
Our mentoring program will be back up and running very soon. The finishing touches are being put to the allocation of players to teams and you should see some of our Senior players at training very soon.
On the social side of things, don’t forget Hollywood Night - 23rdof May. This will be a cracking night. $50 a ticket includes finger food, beer wine and soft drink. Tickets available from the rooms on Wednesday and Friday nights. Just ask for Marie or Sharnie. If you can’t make it on those nights, call Marie on 0413 388 458 or Sharnie 0419 170 494 to book your ticket and get cracking on your costume.
The Annual Ladies Day is on again Saturday 30 May. Tickets are $70 and selling fast. Price includes meal, wine, beer, soft drink and entertainment. Contact either Robyn on 0407 112 253 or Lisa McMahon on 0433 521 962 to book your spot or you can see Deanne for further details.
Dads..you could shout the mums a ticket so you and the kids can watch the seniors play while the Ladies enjoy a day enjoying themselves and not having to worry about the tribe.
And finally this Sunday is Mother’s Day. We’d like to wish a happy Mother’s Day to all our Mums and Grandmothers. We hope you have a great day watching your Roosters in action. We’ll be supporting the White Ribbon foundation on Sunday. Keep your eye out for the merchandise. All funds raised go to this great cause.
I think that covers it….
Have a great week, one and all.
Sean.
