Round 2: Warriors VS Southern Power
The Warrior Women travelled to Gwawley Park on Anzac Day to take on Southern Power, who have made the step up to Division One after securing the Division Two premiership in 2014.
The Warriors began the match superbly kicking 3 goals in the first term and limiting the visitors to 1 point. Although there were plenty of shots on goal, accuracy in the second quarter was an area to reflect on, as the girls went into the break with a lead of 26 points.
The second half ran superbly across the park for the Warriors, with the team producing a further 53 points(8.5) and conceding only 7 (1.1). The Warriors backline was boosted by some great individual performances by veteran Barbara Lynch and rookie Kiona Vance – both players with plenty of touches and possessions at the contest. The goal scoring up front was shared amongst the new and experienced players who presented some great leads and improved their accuracy with some well-polished kicks. The midfield was dominant with Nakita Brown and Liz Fassone applying some brilliant pressure around the ruck, whilst captain Amanda Farrugia, similarly to 2013, terrorised the Power’s defence, kicking 4 goals. Best on ground was awarded to Kristy Sutcliffe who booted a crucial goal early in the game and came up with plenty of quality possessions throughout the match.
A resounding 72 points was the end margin – an impressive effort from the ladies who were playing with the bare 18 for the entirety of the match.
Many thanks to stand-in coach David Marsh and the Support crew of Matty Lawrence, Scott Uglow and Wes Montgomery for helping out the girls on the day.
