On Saturday 25th April the Northern Knights travelled to Morwell to take on Gippsland Power in Round 4 of the TAC Cup. Wintery conditions greeted the two teams although the forecast rain held off until after the match. After a stirring ANZAC ceremony pre-game the Knights were quick out of the blocks with a goal in the opening 30 seconds to Jade Gresham, this was quickly answered by Gippsland. The Power then began to dominate with their forward line looking really dangerous and they were able to take command with a four goal lead at quarter time. The Knights regained some ascendancy in the second quarter and aided by some accurate kicking in front of goal were able to trim the margin back to 22 points by the long break. Unfortunately Northern accuracy in front of goal deserted them in the third term where they managed two goals seven behinds after dominating general play thank to Gresham, James El Moussalli, Matt Perry and Mick Mattingly getting on top in the midfield. With the game in the balance Northern Coach, Andrew Shakespeare urged his players to keep fighting although it was Gippsland who rallied in the final stanza outscoring the Knights four goals to one to complete a 27 point victory. Captain, Jade Gresham was again outstanding for the Knights through the midfield with 37 disposals and two goals continuing his impressive start to the season. Gresham was ably supported by James El Moussalli and Michael Ercolano who both fought hard all game. Lachlan Murphy was solid in defence for the Knights and was able to provide good rebound as well as shutting down some dangerous opponents, while James Marchbank battle manfully in the ruck after illness robbed the Knights of their other rucking option. This Sunday 3rd May the Northern Knights return to Preston City Oval to host the Geelong Falcons. The boys will be looking to keeping their impressive recent home record going and return the winners list this weekend.
