Coaches Comments :- We had the most dramatic change in our playing list in 30+ years. Our preseason was outstanding. A committed group wanting to enjoy success together, was the mantra all summer. So round 1 2015 was always going to be one of interest for all Vermont supporters.
Montrose at Montrose was our round 1 clash, with many including myself, not visiting that part of town for over 10 years. The place has changed, no mud and outstanding facilities for players and supporters.
Round 1 is always tough, and fitness plays a big role. So the side we picked all had fitness on their side. We had many who were very unlucky not to be in the 22.
The first half was a hectic pace. The game was high pressure, tackling from both sides were strong, neither giving much freedom. A very even contest, but we managed to go in a goal up. I was really happy with our application around the ball. The second term was very much the same but we started to get our fair share of ball into our forward line. Our defence was starting to get on top, but we just could convert our chances.
At half time we talked about concentration and our application to the type of game we want to play.
We came out of the blocks 2 goals in as many minutes broke the game open. We continued to really get on top of Montrose, getting out to a 30 point lead. With 30 secs remaining we allowed Montrose to kick a late goal, giving them a glimmer of hope coming into the last quarter. To Montrose credit they hit hard starting the last quarter, lead by there captain who was starting to have some great influence. We continue to enter our 50, with either poor options or conversion. Montrose kept coming hard, but we still had our fair share of ball, skill and decision making errors started to take its toll. Montrose got within 9 points, with a few minutes remaining. We held our nerve and had another 2 scoring shots before the siren blew.
It's funning a lot hinges on round 1, even though we have another 17 rounds to go. But very pleased for our boys to get the points. Doesn't get any easier this week meeting Norwood at home. Our young group looks forward to the next challenged.
