Name: Jake Lowe
Nickname(s): Lowey
Occupation: Mail Officer
AFL Club Supported: Sydney Swans
Umpiring Discipline: Goal
When Did You Start Umpiring: 2006
What Made You Give Umpiring A Go: My dad had started umpiring the season before me, I was interested in the sport, Umpiring provided pocket money while I was at school and I was keeping fit, so win-win.
What Do You Enjoy Most About Umpiring: I enjoy playing my part in the game, Standing behind the goal square is the best spot in the house to watch the play, the contests for the ball, the attempts to score, the last minute touches/kicks.
Highlights Of Your Umpiring Career So Far: I would have to say that my 100th BDAFL match is high on that list, but there are several others, including Goal Umpiring the 2013 Premier Division Grand Final, my involvement in a National Masters tournament, selection in a Regional Development Squad and finally, Goal Umpiring the Swans vs Eastlakes NEAFL match in Newcastle.
Best umpire you’ve umpired with: I don’t want to take anything away from the great people I have umpired with, but for me there are three main people that I loved to umpire with, to see them umpire and to learn from them. They are Grant Godfrey, with whom I made my Under 18s Field debut; Richard Cornish, usually having some of the best conversation whilst umpiring, and the master John Sullivan, probably one of the most passionate footy fans and a genuine ‘clubman.’
Funniest umpire you’ve run with: The Blind Guy has to get a mention here, always fun trying to explain to some players or spectators why we are talking to each other on the radios. Darrel ‘Plucka’ Luck, whether it is an unusual method of delivering the “All Clear” to the goal umpires or forgetting his umpiring shorts on Grand Final Day, Plucka wouldn’t disappoint.
Have You Umpired Previously Before Joining the NCCUA, If So Where: No
Any Pre-Game Rituals / Superstitions: NONE
Favourite Music: AC/DC & Screaming Jets.
Favourite Food / Drink: Pizza, Potato Pies & Coke
Favourite TV Show / Movie: I would normally say Top Gear, but that can’t be anymore, other than sports I like NCIS and The Big Bang Theory.
