Late Goal Sinks Seniors

Round 2 proved a disappointment to the senior men's team with a late goal giving visitors Geelong Rangers the points in a 1-2 loss at Sumner Park.

All goals were scored in the second half.

Co-coach Andrew Ciabotti considered the team got off to a good start.  “The team came out strong in the first half but poor ball usage was their downfall leaving their defensive efforts and commitment unrewarded.

In the second half, we felt in control and believed a goal was coming.”

But instead Rangers scored first with a counter-attacking breakaway, the goal resulting from a keeper's spill on what had seem like a regulation save.

Zebras fought back and soon after scored the equalizer through a spectacular 30 yard effort from James Johnston in the 62nd minute.  Zebras kept up the effort and looked likely to score another.

But less than 10 minutes from full time Rangers took advantage of a free kick just outside the box to put the ball over the Zebras wall and into the top corner of the net and take home the points.

Andrew Ciabotti is now looking two weeks hence.  “The Easter break gives us a chance to regroup after the first two round losses and sends us to Lalor which will no doubt be a tough battle.”

The Reserves fared better with a scoreless draw.
